The Art of Linking

One of the best ways to bring traffic to you site is by getting other sites to link to you, either by reciprocal linking or by buying links on other sites. This isn’t as simple as it sounds and can become very expensive if you choose to purchase your links.

The hard part with reciprocal links is that if your site is new or doesn’t have a lot of traffic you’re going to have a hard time getting quality sites to link to you. One alternative is to get your site listed in free web directories. This will not only help your Google page rank, but will also get you some, not a lot, of traffic.

Check out this page for a list of some popular free web directories to get you started.

Also don’t be too hasty to exchange links with sites that do not equal or exceed your sites traffic. My strategy is to split this up into two areas. I have my links page where I allow most sites to exchange links with me as long as they meet the minimum requirements I’ve set. Then I have an area on the main site where I only exchange links to sites that equal or exceed my sites traffic. A lot of sites do the random affiliates option on the main page, but any site that wants to bring in serious traffic will want their link on the main page all the time, not just once in a while. Sites like that will tend to offer you premium ad space if they know there link will always be on the main page. So it’s a good idea to always have space that’s saved for larger sites.

Now if you’re buying links don’t throw away your money on sites with a Google page rank of less then 4. Page rank 4 is the minimum and very cheap anyway. You should be able to get a full month for under $5. Also don’t use images as your links, that’ll only get you traffic, but do nothing for your Google page rank. Text is much better, but make sure you don’t use the name of your site for the text link, use something else that describes your site. For instance, I would use Digital Art Community, instead of Blue Sfear if I was going to put a text link on someone’s site to link back.

Another way to get some traffic is to submit your site to sites that have “Featured Site of the Week/Month”. If your lucky enough to land a spot on a large site, you can get some serious traffic.

Also don’t forget to link yourself. Make a sitemap that has links to every main page on your site. Sitemaps are every helpful for telling search engine spiders where to go to find your content.

Thats about it for linking. I hope you enjoyed this article.
